How many semitones?

One semitone is the next key on a piano; twelve make an octave. A shift of 2–3 semitones is barely noticeable in the character of the sound. The further you go, the more a voice changes: at 5–6 semitones it starts to sound like a different singer. An instrumental without vocals takes larger shifts better, so 3–5 semitones usually still sound natural.

The page tries to detect the current key of the file and shows what it becomes after the shift. To fit a song to your voice, find the shift where the highest and lowest notes of the melody are comfortable to sing.

Keep tempo or not

With “Keep tempo” on, only the pitch moves and the song keeps its length. With it off, pitch and speed change together, like a record played faster or slower: there is no time-stretching, so no stretching artifacts, but the song gets shorter or longer.

Is the key changer free?

Yes: 10 key changes a day without an account and 30 a day with a free account. It does not use your free masters or vocal removals.

Does the tempo change?

Not by default: the length and tempo stay the same and only the pitch moves. Untick “Keep tempo” for the record-player effect, where pitch and speed change together.

How far can I shift without hurting the sound?

Shifts of 2–3 semitones usually sound natural. At 5–6 semitones a voice starts to sound different in character; an instrumental without vocals takes larger shifts better.

How do I get an instrumental in my key?

Remove the vocals first with the vocal remover, then press “Change the key of the instrumental” on the result. The instrumental opens here without downloading and uploading it again.

Which formats can I download?

MP3 at 320 kbps or WAV. Choose the format before you start.

Is my file stored?

No. The file is processed and the result is sent straight back to your browser; nothing is kept on the server.
