What the artifacts are
- Metallic ringing. Narrow resonances in the upper range, most audible on cymbals, "s" sounds and reverb tails.
- Watery, phasey highs. A swirling texture where detail was reconstructed rather than recorded — common after stem separation.
- Smeared transients. Drums that lose their attack and sit behind the mix.
- Noisy tails. Hiss and grain that become obvious once the track is made louder.
Why cleanup comes before mastering
Mastering raises the level of everything, artifacts included. A limiter pushing a generated track to streaming loudness also pushes the ringing and the wash forward. Cleaning first means the loudness goes to the music, not to the defects.
What cleanup does not do
It cannot restore detail the generator never produced, and it does not rewrite the arrangement or the vocal. On a track with heavy artifacts it makes them less distracting, not absent. The report shows the result either way.
